DESIGN & PLACE / FIELD GUIDE

Mediterranean influence. A local identity.

Bring the warmth of Spain and the restraint of Italy into a hotel without losing its own sense of place.

Start with the property

A visual reference is a starting point, not a finished identity. Before selecting arches, stone or ceramics, document the building’s proportions, local materials, views and patterns of use. Ask what guests should feel, and what the team can keep beautiful through daily service. A terrace photographed at noon may feel entirely different during dinner.

Translate the influence

Borrow principles rather than complete scenes: the social rhythm of a courtyard, the intimacy of a shaded table, or the restraint of a carefully chosen material palette. Work with local makers on original pieces. Explain their contribution accurately and compensate their work. A regional story should be developed with the people whose culture it represents.

Test before committing

Mock up one room or seating area. Invite housekeeping, engineering and service colleagues to test cleaning, access, lighting and furniture movement. Review samples in daylight and evening light. Resolve these details before ordering across the property.

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE

  • Write three qualities the space should communicate.
  • Record local contributors and material origins.
  • Test one complete setting with the operating team.

What to observe

Track maintenance demands and guest comments about comfort as well as appearance.

An introductory working framework. Adapt it to your property, your guests and the responsible team’s requirements.
